Appreciation towards mA-style Architects for providing the following description:

The site is in a shady location where a two-story neighboring house closely stands on the south side, and even the shade and shadow on the
path intensify the impression of darkness. Therefore, the design intended to create a space with uniformly distributed light by adjusting the way
of letting daylight in, and the way of directing the light. By taking into consideration the space for the residents, the functions for living, and the
relationship with the surrounding environment, creation of a diversity and richness in the house was intended by controlling the concept of light.

/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/_c_-V4lt4I4Z8UNSmGsOm1ufSfK2x0VkmvYdjNVRYaPYIusu3MrmImwSz-O1-FUKxQGmFwNKWVc7j86m49ZaP_NxVbtNkjkYNp4.jpg

Along the edges of the 9.1m square roof, sky lights are made, as if creating an outline, in order to provide sunlight. The roof beams narrow the
sunlight, and the slightly angled clapboard interior walls with laminated wood reflect and diffuse the light. As a result, soft and uniformly
distributed light is created and surrounds the entire space.
Along the outline of lighting, work spaces such as a kitchen, bathroom, and study
are arranged. Private spaces such as bedrooms and storage are allocated into four boxes. The path-like spaces created between them are
public spaces. Each box attempts to balance within a large spatial volume. Light coupled with the rhythm of scale raises the possibilities of the
living space for the residents.

Considering each box as a house, the empty spaces in between can be seen as paths or plazas, and remind us of a small town enclosed in
light. The empty spaces, which cause shortening or elongating of distances between people, are intermediate spaces for the residents, as well
as intermediate spaces that are connected to the outside when the corridor is open, and these are the image of a social structure that includes
a variety of individuals.
In terms of a natural component, in which light is softened by small manipulations, and of a social component, in which a
town is created in the house, this house turned out to be a courtyard house of light where new values are discovered.

Conversation between

对谈:gooood  VS mA-style Architects

gooood :

KOYA no SUMIKA

The form of the project “Koya no Sumika”, especially the roof, has an interesting formal relationship with the adjacent traditional Japanese
house. How do you see this relationship?

mA-style Architects:

In a Japanese country house there is, typically, a small adjacent building known as a ‘Wakiya’ used for storage or other agricultural purposes.

This ‘Wakiya,’ without asserting dominance over the main wing of the house, is meant to be humble and unobtrusive.
Like the ‘Wakiya,’ the ‘Koyanosumika’ project is also an addition to an existing house. However, while it possesses an architectonic meaning
similar to that of the ‘Wakiya,’ ‘Koyanosumika’ surpasses what might be considered the characteristically small form of Japanese architecture
to coexist in harmony with the extant house despite their disparate ages.

gooood :

In both of the projects “Koya no Sumika” and “Light walls house”, the roofs of the projects appear to be independent from the interior space.
What’s your comment on this?

mA-style Architects:

It is not completely unrelated. Rather, we believe it can have a profound effect on the space.

For example, the  “Light walls house” house utilizes a ‘box in box’ organization, with the primary beam running diagonal to the perimeter of the
house (this being the largest, outer box) and  supported by the strength of two smaller, inner boxes. This beam supports its perpendicular
counterpart and this whole truss assembly, in turn, supports the smaller joists that create the 303 mm pitch of the ceiling and roof.Through this
structural scheme we were able to create a column-free space inside the volume of the primary box as well as control the amount of sunlight
streaming in from the top-light.We moved this top-light to the periphery of the primary structure, to each of the four sides of the roof, creating a
fissure at the edge of where the ceiling meets the four perimeter walls. This allows for the entire house to be encircled by natural light.

Furthermore, in the ‘Koyanosumika’ project, we designed the 2m high U-shaped frame of the building to be held in place by a small load-bearing
wall. This simple, continuous construction collects the small living spaces of everyday life and organizes them into one large centralized space.
Perched atop this primary structure is a humble roof comprised of a thin, laminated, v-shaped panels. The primary structure and the roofing
resting on top work in concert with one another, playing with textural differences, making those inside the structure aware of contrasts articulated
within the living space. This textural contrast, along with experiences in scalar differences felt between the small roof and the large inner volume,
were designed with the intention of creating a blank slate, a site to engage the imagination of those living within the structure.

In the design of such an architecture or reciprocity, space must be organized with consideration for the roof and its relation to the sky, as well as
the important roles of scale and volume.

gooood :

Light walls house

In the project “Light walls house”, the independence of the roof frees the interior space, and allows it to perform as a mini city. So here are two
questions, first, what’s your comment on this; second, how do you see the relationship between this interior mini city and the bigger city outside
this building.

mA-style Architects:

We arranged the building according to how it takes in light and guides it through its interior. In the same way light filters through a collection of
closely packed houses of different scales, at the Hikarinokuruwa house our intention was to construct an experience in which preferential
moments of sunlight would filter in and amongst the main avenue traversing the volume of the primary box as well as within the interstitial found
between the various sized boxes. Like the spaces between houses, the interior of the Hikarinokuruwa house evokes an image of an assembly
of alleyways or town squares. It is as if the interior is an expression of the exterior condition in which the building resides.

The family members who inhabit the house, the father, mother, and child, grow in mutual respect to one another, in the same manner that a
healthy society grows through the building and strengthening of personal relationships. Through this preservation of human relations, the
house becomes like a microcosm of society, a space that engenders the multiplicities of human potential.

Furthermore, the ‘streets’ inside this house are avenues composed of rammed earth (doma), and when the large sliding doors at the perimeter
of the building are thrown open a thoroughfare through the house is created, blurring the line between the streets on the exterior of the building
and those on the interior.

The composition of a family and of a society are bound to each other. As such, we believe that a new sense of universality can be achieved
through their mutual, connected growth.
