我们的工作坊关注参数化设计工具在大尺度空间设计中的运用,利用数据化软件高效处理大量的信息。在我们的设计方法论中,将多层信息整合为一个复杂系统的设计过程能够同时将环境的、基础设施的、社会的、经济的因素纳入考虑,导向最终的设计方案(请参照后文“日程”一栏中的具体举例)。

Our workshops focus on the application of parametric tools on large-scale design, where computational tools can handle a vast amount of information in a very agile and effective way. In our methodology, the integration of multiple layers of information into one complex system leads to a design output that can tackle at the same time environmental, infrastructural, social and economic factors (please refer to the workshop schedule for specific examples).

我们认为,大尺度的空间规划及设计是与对中小尺度空间定义紧密联系的。我们将这些中小尺度的空间组成定义为原型,研究原型为适应不同地段条件而必须产生的各种变体。通过控制这些变体的空间形式、条件,及其集聚的规律和方式,规划师得以同时兼顾大、中、小尺度的空间规划,实现从城市规划到建筑设计连贯一体的,真正的跨尺度设计。

Large developments are generated through the aggregation of multiple families of components, which we call prototypes for their ability to adapt to different conditions. The control of their local behavior and their logic of aggregation allows designers to work in a truly multi-scalar way, touching simultaneously the urban condition and the fine architectural details.

同时,“算法”自身的逻辑决定了其适应变化设计条件(所设参数的不同输入值)的能力。因而,我们的设计方法能够产生动态的设计结果,以应对不同时期地段物理的或经济的条件变化(因为往往周期较长,这一点对于大尺度的空间设计尤为重要)。

Furthermore, an algorithm has by definition the ability to react to changes in the values of its parameters so our approach produces dynamic design proposals that can address transformations in the physical or economic conditions of the site over time (which is crucial for large-scale developments, where the time variable is particularly relevant).

在某种意义上说,我们教授的设计工具可以为多个领域的学生和实践者所使用:包括建筑师,景观设计师,城市设计师,城市规划师,开发商等。暑假班的50名第一批学员就来自不同的学科背景:建筑学,景观建筑,城市设计和规划,室内和环境设计,地理学等。四分之一的学员是在职设计师,希望通过工作坊的学习为他们的设计实践扩充技术知识,而其他的学员是来自中国,美国以及欧洲的的本科生和研究生,希望借此机会增加他们的学术履历。

In this sense, our toolset can appeal to a wide range of students and professionals. This was in fact reflected in the composition of our first batch of students: Architects, Landscape Architects, Urban Designers and Planners, Interior and Environmental Designers, Geographers… One fourth of them were professionals that wanted to expand their technical knowledge for their design practice, while the others were undergraduate and graduate students from China, the US, and Europe that wished to strengthen their academic profiles.

EQUIPMENT: all students are required to bring their own laptop with Rhinoceros 5 for Windows (preferable the English version) and the latest version of Grasshopper installed (Rhinoceros for Mac has still limited functionalities).

在这个工作坊中,我们会锁定设计过程中的重要一环:从场地提取和支配所有的可见和不可见的多层信息(有些关于物理空间的可见信息,有些是关于地段如何运行的无形的功能信息)。这种允许我们分析空间并挖掘其生成性参数的方法,我们将其称作为indexing(地域分析)。我们同时强调数据可视化的作为一种能够设计表现技法的重要性:使用多层叠加的三维图示的方式(数据域)和动画的方式,允许我们生成一种全新的交互性更强的一种“地图”,使学生们更容易的发现场地的问题,发现设计的潜在机遇,并因而为下一步的方案生成提供了缜密的逻辑基础与文脉解读。

In this workshop we will focus on a crucial step of the design: the extraction and manipulation of all the layers of information hidden behind the morphology and functionality of a site. We call indexing the technique that allows us to analyze a space and extract its generative parameters. With a special emphasis on advanced techniques of representation, with the use of multilayered three-dimensional diagrams (data-scapes) and animations we will produce an interactive cartography of the site that allows students to identify problems and opportunities and provide a basis for a future design proposal that has a sound logic and is rooted in its context.

In any large-scale design competition analytical and representational skills are key elements of a winning proposal and our techniques will enhance the capacity of the students to produce complex analysis with a design-oriented focus.

通过对indexing(地域分析)的学习,学生能够清晰解读非物质(经济的,社会的,政治的)及物质层面(生态的,基础设施的)之间复杂而丰富的联系。将所有这些层面的信息整合成为一个量化的系统,能够为下一步的设计过程设置相应的关键参数以及逻辑架构。在工作坊中,我们会尽可能多的包含定量的与定性的数据,使得在多尺度层面上建立多个“控制系统”成为可能。

Through indexing students will clarify the relationships between the non-physical (economic, social and political) and the physical (ecological and infrastructural). The integration of all these layers in a quantifiable system will establish the relevant variables and the logic that will structure the future design proposals. In the workshop we will incorporate as much quantitative and qualitative data as possible creating multiple “control systems” that operate at multiple scales simultaneously.

工作坊的内容分为三部分:理论,技术辅导与设计应用。每天我们
都将学习多个新的工具,我们将从传统空间与数据分析技术当中提取出参数化逻辑,编写一系列程序(GH definition)并将其运用在多个场地之中以测试其适应性。随着工作坊的深入,这些程序开始彼此产生关联,成为一整套可以适应不同场地条件和设计目标的个性化分析与设计工具。在技术训练的同时,一系列讲座为学生的学习提供了解这套设计方法论的理论背景,解释了不同方法之间的相关性并为实际项目当中全方位运用这些技术提供范例。

The content of the workshop is structured along three main sections: theory, technical development and applications. Every day we will study new tools, extracting the parametric logic from traditional analytical techniques and we will develop a series of definitions that are applied to different sites in order to test their flexibility. As the workshop advances the individual definitions will start interconnecting with each other building-up a full new toolset that can be customized for different initial conditions and design goals. Parallel to the technical training, a series of evening lectures will offer the theoretical background to support this new methodology, explaining the relevance of different approaches and providing examples of full-scale applications in real projects.

DIRECTOR: Nicola Saladino

尼古拉毕业于巴塞罗那理工学校建筑系,曾在该校教授设计课并负责多部重要的学术刊物的编辑工作。2009年于伦敦建筑联盟学院景观城市学专业毕业并获得优秀研究生毕业设计荣誉。

自毕业以来,尼古拉在包括建筑联盟学院、Veritas大学(San Jose,哥斯达黎加)、麻省理工学院、香港大学和清华大学在内的多个学校教授设计课,专注于在城市设计领域应用参数化分析与设计方法的研究,目前任教于中央美院国际预科班。

专注于独立实践前,他曾在巴塞罗那、伦敦、北京,包括Plasma Studio和Groundlab在内的多个建筑事务所进行建筑与城市设计实践。

Nicola Saladino graduated in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona and in 2009 he obtained his Master degree with distinction from the Landscape Urbanism program at the Architectural Association in London.

He has carried out several workshops in the Architectural Association and has been invited to numerous international universities such as MIT, Veritas (Costa Rica), Hong Kong University and Tsinghua University, where he was involved in the Landscape Urbanism program with Prof. Eva Castro. He was also a tutor at Beijing LCD (Laboratory for Computational Design) and is currently teaching in the International Foundation Course at Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts.

As a designer he worked in several offices in Barcelona, London and Beijing on urban design and architecture, including Plasma Studio and Groundlab.

reMIX is a Beijing based studio born from the experience that the three founding partners, Chen Chen, Federico Ruberto and Nicola Saladino, have developed during years of academic research and through the collaborations with various international firms, studying and inquiring diverse scales of interventions and procedural attitudes.

The studio expertise ranges from architecture to landscape and urban design. Moving on multiple grounds, analyzing, translating and transforming the interrelated peculiarities of performative logics, our work aims at establishing a transitional line of research that oscillates between processual complexities and material economies. The outcome is an expression of formal synergies, a modulation of analogical and digital processes, of diagrammatic and emergent organizations. Our structural geometries are gestural negotiations, converging results of constant conceptual revisions of forms and dogmas: mechanisms for debating, retracing and reframing.

A spatial chemistry is developed in order to achieve a synthesis of systemic performances, of signifying multiplicities, of social and environmental heterogeneities: admixtures ethereally fluctuating, constantly transforming. The understanding of the territory and its constitutive and constantly evolving metabolic networks and systems of power relations is the terrain onto which the redefinition and revision of presupposed dichotomies such as natural / artificial and local / global can depart, where the envisioning and construction of future social assemblages can finally take off.

We aim in sum for a critical integration, a non-linear incorporation, of architecture and landscape into a synthetic urban hybrid.
