“坊上人”是西安地区对信仰伊斯兰教的回族人一种亲切的称谓。从唐代开始，伊斯兰教传入中国，在元代逐渐形成围寺而居，被称为“回坊”，故“坊上人”也由此而来。
建筑的外部形体为一个长方体与一个圆柱体穿插而成，弧形的南立面位于十字路口旁，是以圆形为主，西立面以方形为主，两个主要立面各自独立完整。南立面迎向十字路口，上面做镂空处理，下部以实体处理。

镂空的形式为八角星的变形，多样且统一。上层镂空立面为双层，里面是玻璃幕墙，外层为镂空的铝板。在铝板的接缝处闭合处理，使得立面完整圆润。傍晚，室内的灯光映射出来，上面镂空的圆柱体就如同一个城市灯箱一样，神秘而独特。

与之同时，建筑内部的形式亦散发出很强的视觉冲击力，如厚实的装饰墙体、体块感很强的造型洞口及带有重量感的台面等等都配有硬朗而纯粹的几何形式，在这些简洁有力的几何形式中镶嵌着复杂的伊斯兰图案，这样的对比感带给人一种强烈的视觉冲击力，并且有一种现代性与地域性的融合感。
从建筑外观到内部装饰处理，简洁的基础几何形体与抽象的伊斯兰图案这两种形式的结合，使得建筑形式产生一种力量，带给人们视觉上的冲击与心灵上的触动。
