Architectural Poetry Calendar 2017

Remember the iF Design Award Winner “2015 Architects’ Calendar”? Adhering to our tradition, we roll out the new calendar for the new year “Architectural Poetry Calendar 2017”.

This calendar is inspired by the knight of Byzantium architecture – Carlo Scarpa who composes poems through concrete: the message of time and space interweave with the mottles of his architects, like flowing verses whose tune lingers long.

Italians are seen as the natural lovers, and Scarpa is probably the idol of every girl who studies architecture. The architectural mysteries created by Carlo Scarpa could satisfy any attempt to explore art, like “flowing poems in space”. Karl Straus side that “Design is not merely looking for solutions, it plants mysteries in them at the same time”, and the mysteries hiding in Carlo’s buildings leads to numerous cultural and historical interpretations.

“Max Weber thinks that modernization is a process of disenchantment, in which instrumental reasoning eliminates divinity and supernatural causes gradually. On the contrary, we found that Scarpa revives the magic and divinity, which are reflected in the ubiquitous details in his architectures. To arouse the visitors from idleness and unconcern is the precondition for re-enchantment. when standing in front of his works, you will feel awed of them, and cannot help perceiving and meditating, communicating with them though indulging in their aura; and feeling the joy and sublimation of spirit.” by June.

It is the details of Scarpa’s architectures that is most astonishing: details such as walls, floor, stairs, banisters and even hardware interact one another through crossing, overhanging, floating, inlaying, paralleling, arraying and gradient, creating a force field full of rivalries, collisions, gatherings and partings. And through these details, Scarpa delivers his insight into religion, philosophy and life: the two overlapping windows at the end of the aisle are the symbols for Yin and Yang, Life and Death, and the circinate pool is likely implying the circle of life…

Unlike the mainstream architects at his time, Scarpa set his affections on traditional Venice handcraft. Throughout all of his architectures, we found strong humanistic and poetic nature. It is his handcraft complex and poetic express in architecture that influence us profoundly, therefore, we try to deliver Scarpa’s poetic charisma onto paper craft in the new year Calendar design.

This is another interesting attempt to present time through architectural language. We design the numbers 1-12 according to Scarpa’s favorite module 5.5cm x5.5cm, at the same time adding his architectural details to the numbers. Once the concept was decided, the design process went very smoothly and the final design was completed at the end of October which was much earlier than we expected. But we only realized later that it is just the beginning of real challenges.

According to our design, the 12 numbers of the months will be embossed in the paper through compression molding, however if the numbers protrude too much, the paper will be pierced, and if they protrude less, the embossed effect can barely be seen. We even tried to contact braille printing factories, but problem are still not solved. While being troubled by the dilemma, Mr. Su Hang shed light on us: we found QL-Art printing company through him. Sharing the same spirit with us, QL-Art realized our expected effect through refined steel moulds and strong wood pulp paper. The color and texture of the paper best reproduce the silence and peace of concrete, bringing Scarpa’s architectures onto the paper vividly. We could finally present ToThree’s best wishes through our calendars.

At the same time, packaging is another challenge. We had found a good supplier for the scroll holder, however the sample was damaged during delivery. In order to avoid the potential  damage to the calendar, we gave up this suppler and found an industrial cylinder holder factory. After overcoming numbers of difficulties due to professional gaps, the package is finally settled. It took us 40 days to make this calendar a real product, which reminds me of Carlo Scarpa. He never rushed in his work and once he even hid behind the door and pretend that he is not in when a client went to his office to urge him to finish his project faster. What a typical designers’ character: we do not stop deliberating until the last minute. Evolutionally, a designer is probably the monkey who believes that there is always better choice.
