Hengshan road is an important road in Hengfu historical and cultural district. As the uptown of Shanghai, Hengshan road impacts Shanghai with its special character for more than 100 years. However, its key feature is fading little by little nowadays. Streets, like many old districts of Shanghai, are facing urban renewal. We believe, streets are not only urban infrastructure for vehicle traffic. Also, street renewal is not only about street green space renewal or street furniture replacement. Its key essence should be urban public space that holds various public life.

Hengshan road is urban artery, bearing great vehicle traffics. Besides, there are many historical preservation buildings along it. Thus, the design focuses on improving pedestrian experience and spatial quality. Through the analysis of walking path and time, we could see that Hengshan road has many walking advantages. Through the analysis of tourism hot spots and activities(data from Mafengwo and Douban), we consider, bring in new hot spots, is an essential method of reviving the street and reshaping its character.

We believe, Hengshan road shall become an on-going hot spot that provides fun. It is readable, edible, playable and enjoyable. The linear space provides better ornamental value and participation possibilities for pedestrians, and more interesting landmarks for residents and tourists. For the current situation, there are a lot negative green space, inferior walking space, and few dilapidated or transformable buildings. We design new function and spatial feature for 13 of them.

Though the existing Hengshan Park is open to public, it is not a popular and attractive place. The design puts fun vegetation barrels in the park, growing organic vegetables and fruits. It also provides children playground and holds regular community vegetable market. Hengshan food-park will become a place of learning, participation and recreation, a new park landmark of Shanghai.

The green space outside of Keven Cafe has been wasted. The plants and pergola doesn’t provide decent space for pedestrians and tourists, while doesn’t mark the character of the site. The design transforms the negative green space to positive open space. The 5-storey tray structure integrates plants in vertical direction, while also provides a platform for overseeing Xujiahui Park and Hengshan Park. The ground space is redivided to suit different functions, such as outdoor cafe tables, food trucks and square. It increases the efficiency of use, and encourages communication and activities to happen.

【Read and Eat library and gallery】

Green space divides residential community and roads, resulting in negative street interface. The design replaces elevated plant ground by small-scale architectures and green space. With the theme “read and eat”, small desert shop, bookstore, and young artists gallery is brought to the street to increase interaction. Rotating wall marks the entrance of buildings to make walking experience more interesting.

Two existing 2-storey residential buildings which to be transformed can be accessed from an alley with an entrance door. The design keeps their original scale and basic structure, while adding transparent material, such as glass to form the building surface. The new function is a small community food library and an art exhibition house with food services. The outdoor space is also redesigned to create quiet and special public activity space.

The existing 3-storey building besides street is dilapidated. However, the triangular space between the building and arcade is remarkable. The design keeps its exterior wall structure and break interior floors to make it a sports hall with membrane facilities. Together with outdoor sports facilities, to make it a place of relaxation and communication for young white-collar workers and teenagers. The exterior wall is reinforced and converted to a climbing wall. The other adjacent building is transformed to a sports shop. The place will become a new sports landmark near metro station.

On one side of the street is rigid wall and narrow sidewalk, on the other side is the church’s wall, separating green space and sidewalk. The design first sets the wall backward and reserve space for boxes full of live plants, with the theme “love”. Plants can creates oxygen which imply to “love is like oxygen”. These are boxes for people to experience and communication. The other wall is designed to be a slidable wall. On weekdays, it separates the church and street. On weekends, it will become market canopies. Green space then will be shared.

There is no certain answer for urban design. What we are trying to do is to provide a possible solution, maybe a more interesting solution, for urban street regeneration.
