Why go abroad?

I want to see what others are doing, to see what is happening in the world.

Is there anything happened impressed you the most abroad?

There are many impressive things. To me, the most impressive thing is how clear my foreign classmate makes choices and how comprehensively they acknowledge themselves.

What do you miss the most about China?

What I miss most, is that warm and familiar feeling, which is complex and warm. I miss delicious food as well.

Will you come back? Why?

Yes. On the one hand, I want to do something interesting in an emotionally comfortable environment, on the other hand, I still miss lots of things a lot.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

Personally, I have not got a clear view about China. What you see is just what from your point, namely they are lopsided views. In short time, it seems you get a lot of new points from new medias which hold their position. But in the long run, lacking participating for time and distance will end up with an obscure view.

What are the educational characteristics of your school?

In Washington University in St. Louis, the architecture major is at Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts. You can learn a lot from other art majors. The architecture education here is solid and traditional. Your final project roots from your interest and one semester’s comprehensive research about Saint Louis local cultural and society condition. From here, you can get a clear understanding of the death and life of great American cities through Saint Louis this typical one.

Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

My favorite artist is Wes Andeson. He always shows levels of racy metaphors and lots of information. His movies tell a comprehensive story through gaudy colors and thoughtful scenes. He hides lots of Easter eggs in details, giving watchers surprise. From he, I try to understand how to show a project logically and interesting at the same time.

What amazing character do your works have?

Compared with many attractive portfolios, mine is quite traditional. I have been working on doing my works logically and interesting at the same time, so I always hide some Easter eggs in my stories.

When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?

I have been following gooood since I began to apply for graduate school. I like its clear structure and diverse contents.

1.
Present Perfection

“There is only one time to be happy and that time is now.”

The project focuses on overlapping between elders, children and humane environment. In order to create an interlocked lively living system, three different functions are organized with other social interactive functions together. This multi-direction beneficial system enables elders, children and pets grow together with the physical and emotional connection. Different parts overlap vertically or horizontally via physical contact or emotional connection, traditional rigid grid senior living facility and pre-education school are replaced by a project which blurs physical, emotional boundary. At the same time, to develop a better living and working environment, landscape and nature light are introduced inside the project. The project also closely interacts with the community, providing a platform for community activities which are a necessary part of fighting against elders’ depression and growth of children.

Interesting, embarrassing, enjoyable, playful moments exist in the project, but they are profound and impressing. What is now for elders may be the future for children. For elders, they have experience, for children, they are like a white paper to write on. What overlaps between them, is present. Present Perfection.

01-01

Youths in American pretends to move out for freedom, while in must Asian countries, young generations move back after their study for a reunion. Traditional assisted living facilities pay more attention to security and regulation, but neglect users’ requirements. Lots of research have proven that pets and children can significantly reduce the use of drugs and death rates.

01-02

Project Collage. Breakdown traditional assisted living facility’s rigid layout, blurring vertical and horizontal boundaries, introducing social functions and landscape into the project.

Designthinking collage [

Based on different users requirements and their daily schedules, the project tries to layout different functions on horizontal and vertical direction and strengths their relationships with community life.

01-04

Internally, Different functions visually connect with each other closely, externally relate with the community as well. Elders who sit in the group activity room can see children playing with dogs in the multifunctional hall. Community residents walking on outdoor ramps can see children playing in the indoor playground. Seniors and children in pre-education classrooms can see their friends in the swimming pool. Seniors in group activity rooms can see children in classrooms study and play on outdoor platforms.

Mirror in Environment- rehabilitation in St. Louis

The project aims at maximizing the advantage of the environment and a warm community atmosphere to accelerate patients’ recovery process. The project responses to the surrounding environment on different levels, enabling patients to get closer at various environment features. Interiorly, community activities happen on different floors and various privacy levels. Patients are totally supported and well communicated during a recovery process.

The “Z” shape layout together with the bridge in the middle point create four courtyards with different features. They introduce landscape into the project. They are semi-enclosed water courtyard, enclosed courtyard, semi-enclosed forest courtyard, enclosed forest courtyard. Different spatial qualities and various environment features provide patients an optional recover condition.

Arts in Old North St. Louis- Performing St. Louis

Mullanphy House previously is a temporary hotel for people new to St.Louis. It suffered from inadequate maintenance and severe weather. The project reactivates it in flexible and affordable ways. Relocating its entrance direction, it provides a larger foyer to main road direction. In this direction, the project provides multiple platforms on different levels, to enable visual connection between heights and functions. A lively front plaza and a quiet back courtyard satisfy different requirements. A loop on the ground floor and in the air, strengthen the connection between new and old.

The project starts with analyzing about local artists’ works. Research is about the time and space showed in their works. Through series of models, thinking about how to occupy space with flexibility and hierarchy.

4.
Unlimited Folding platforms for community

The project combines Helsinki’s courtyard spirit, cultural requirements, education, and sports. Its continuous spatial sequence satisfies requirements from community and tourists. Sunken city plaza, middle cultural platform, top entertainment deck are platforms for the public on different heights, with their levels from community to privacy. What beneath these nodes are sporting, cultural or entertainment space for the surrounding community. Light wells organize whole interior activities, introducing light inside. Holes on light wells provide visual communicate possibilities between different heights.

movie frame

The project starts with thinking about architecture’s role in people’s daily city life. People’s activities are framed on the film of architecture. So, architecture becomes the carrier of daily life. Different users coexist on the film, drawing the schedule of their daily life.

04-02 (2)

The form of the architecture is motivated by Le Corbusier’s project, unlimited museum. The unlimited extended Ziggurat ramp, linking different urban life together, covering the public activities beneath it. Lively and peacefully city life happens at the different sides of the ramp at the same time. The function layout base on each parts’ running schedules, from bottom to the top, forming a continuous transition from lively to quite urban life sequence.

House for Elderly, Traversed Living

The project locates in Hillsboro’s northeast corner. The project is a mediator between surrounding environment and Hillsboro people’s daily life, encouraging people to go into the environment. The layered building connects to environment seamlessly by continuous ramps. People can approach landscape quickly on the ground floor when they traverse the building. The mediating layering idea is applied to the organizing of units. Layering units according to privacy and relationship with the environment. Facades vary in transparency, mediating between light and life.
