A unique installation in the main square in Tempio Pausania, Sardinia, was inaugurated recently. It is dedicated to Italian singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André. A series of colored sails fluctuate in the sky, in the center of this small town. The light and ever-changing installation is designed by Alvisi Kirimoto + Partners together with Renzo Piano, who conceived the early idea.
“This intervention, with its lightness and its untamed vitality, allowed us to relate ourselves once again with small urban centers. Starting from Renzo Piano’s idea to ‘capture the rays of light and its colors’, we moved the action up high, above the piazza, thus forcing passers-by to look beyond the roofs, to deal with the gray buildings and the color of the sky, to transcend the angular margins of the area,” says architect Massimo Alvisi.
Narrow roads lead to the 375 square-meter piazza. The installation consists in a series of cables and sails. When open, the sails are triangular in shape and have varied dimensions; when closed, they disappear leaving space to a series of “colored pencils” suspended between the buildings.

The sails are 12 fabric triangles of different dimensions. The smallest one measures 1,60 x 1,20 x 1,30 (2,06 square meters), the largest one measures 5,90 x 4,50 x 3,20 (15,60 square meters). The fabric is printed polyster (Serge Ferrarì – Soltis 92).

▽ 几何构型分析，diagram of geometrical configuration
Each sail is equipped with a motorized roller, rods, pulleys and a release spring that calibrate movements. The components are very similar to the ones employed for sailing. The sails may be rearranged in groups or individually, according to the final configuration one wishes to achieve. Their movement is controlled from a panel positioned inside the former-market building. Such control panel is provided with a wind gauge and a moisture meter that may trigger the automatic closing of the sails in case of excessive wind or rain.

The net of steel cables is anchored to the thick and solid granite walls that were punctured, cement injected into the holes and holding the supports for the cables whose visual impact is hence minimal.
Along 3 of the 4 perimeter buildings (all except the market building) are metal bars that support the lighting fixtures. It’s a total of 14 lamps (iGuzzini – Maxi Woody) with different optics depending on their proximity to the sail. The metal bars that support the lighting fixtures are meant to also hold sound speakers and video projectors in case of special performances or multimedia installations.
